Sacred Bark
Sacred bark — cascara sagrada — is the aged bark of a Pacific Northwest buckthorn tree, and ours is a fine cut: small chips that measure and steep easily. Its name means "sacred bark," and in home herbal practice it has long been known as a strong traditional herb for occasional sluggishness and stubborn constipation of the bowels. This is a serious, purposeful herb, used with respect and only now and then — the one families kept at the back of the shelf for when nothing gentler would do.
Everyday uses:
• Traditional short-term decoction tea for occasional constipation
• Occasionally blended in small amounts into bitter herb formulas
• Kept on the shelf for the times it is truly needed — not a daily tea
How to use: Simmer 1 teaspoon in a cup of water, covered, 15–20 minutes, then strain. Start with a small, weak cup in the evening; a little is enough.
A note: A strong traditional laxative herb. For short-term, occasional use only. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing, and not for children.
